Iconic Singer Jody Watley Becomes National Museum of African American Music First Ever Ambassador

March 3, 2021 - Jody Watley, the Grammy award winner trendsetting icon in music, video, fashion and style has been appointed to be National Museum of African American Music’s first ever membership ambassador for the museum.

Watley is one of the architects of 21st century pop. From her groundbreaking marriage of rap & R&B (1987’s “Friends,” a collaboration with hip-hop legends Eric B. & Rakim) to her vision-forward marriage of high fashion, street fashion and music in the ‘80s (long before it became the norm), to her fusion of jazz and underground club culture with keen pop instincts, and the ease with which she crossed and still crosses genre, she forged the template that is now everybody’s playbook.

“We are excited to name Jody Watley as our membership ambassador," Kara Duke, Development and Membership Manager at NMAAM said in a statement on March 1, 2021.  "Black Music finally has a home and with your support, we can make sure it will be here to inspire visitors for years to come," says Duke."

Located in downtown Nashville, the museum tells the story of America’s music and the people that made it. With artifacts from some of your favorite artists and interactive galleries, it is an unforgettable experience for music lovers of all ages.

Visitors can celebrate black music 365 days a year by purchasing a museum membership.

Meet Brian & Darnitra Jackson, a Black husband and wife team with over 20 years of combined experience in graphic design, marketing, photography, and 3D animation. Their company, Unimation Media, promised to shake things up and 6 months later, the receipts are in.

Previously, with even a passing glance, a person would notice these types of media graphics and ended up being disappointed because there was not a diverse choice of multi-cultural assets. Brian, who is the lead 3D animator at the firm, comments, "Things were always going to change when we launched the Scroll Stopping Dance Pack."

He continues, "Where you will likely always see our competitors doing the same old thing, we wanted to make a point to provide various multi-cultural media that will wow audiences and fill the void with no sacrifice in quality. We do this because we believe these realistic 3D animated assets will help various businesses make more money and engage new customers.

Diverse assets like these didn't exist until innovation drove progress into gear and our ideas became reality for various businesses and marketers, using these assets in their digital projects. Ultimately we knew it was going to be a tremendous benefit to our customers because it will save them time, money and help them closely represent, connect and engage with their audience."

Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce Blazes New Partnership to Keep African American Small Business Owners Afloat Amidst Pandemic

New York, New York - Many small business owners and members in the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. were underserved during the first rounds of the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans due to inequities and delays in getting to details to the African American community. At the same time, many large companies had the advantages provided by well-staffed accounting departments to deal with the issues and process of applying for PPP loans.

Prior to the pandemic, the Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. launched its Retool, Refocus, and Rebuild Black Business Campaign. The Chamber looked at the staggering number of businesses in the local community that were sole proprietorships and were told they could not apply for the PPP loans.

After some research, the Chamber learned sole proprietors who report income and pay taxes on a Schedule C in their personal tax return, as well as independent contractors who collect 1099-MISC forms were able to participate in the PPP program if they submit a Schedule C, instead of 1099s.

January is the beginning of the New Year and already it has been a jolting one.  Last year we survived and continue to thrive besides some challenging times to say the least.  We've lost some giants of legacy recently like Hank Aaron and Cicely Tyson.

While the war continues to wage with the pandemic and social unrest continues to be a concern we see some light at the end of the tunnel.  In fact we have to be that light in stormy cloudy times.  Jazz as an invigorating musical artform can illuminate better things for the future.

Music has always had the ability to reflect and change the tenor of the times.  As we not long ago commemorated the life of the drum major for justice - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy "We Won't Let Nobody Turn Us Around," as the ole negro spiritual proclaimed.

The hot spot for jazz in Queens, NY, Jackson Room, won't let nobody or anything turn them around from motivating our community, and now the world with their invigorating vibes of jazz!

Ed Jackson, and his jazz club won't be deterred in their mission to bring world class jazz to our Southeast Queens community - and now share the Jackson Room Jazz experience with the world.  They will be using streaming technology to forge ahead with their Month's End Motivations.

So Let's get this joint jumping in January with Latin Jazz from a favorite of Jackson Room, performance acts: the Willie Martinez Trio!  Ed Jackson, the club owner for the jazz hotspot, will be featured as  his special featured guest.

You won't want to miss this riveting performance with talented Latin Jazz group The Willie Martinez Trio and Special Guest Ed Jackson streamed to you in live video from the Jackson Room, in NY on Saturday, January 30th at 8:30PM EST. / 5:30PM PST. Safie Russell Helps Business People To Understand PPP 2.0 And Business Setup

According to National Geographic, many Black business owners don't have enough equity in their business due to structural racism. Therefore, they have less of a cushion to withstand the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

"Weatherproofing your company is especially critical after living and experiencing COVID-19: Small business owners must prepare for the unexpected:

Create a quarantine proof enterprise
Pay attention to details
Invest in networking and relationships
Track spending and budget

Find joy in the business through the highs and lows and invest in wellness and meditation," says Safietou D. Russell, founder of SDR Consulting Inc. https://www.sdrconsultinginc.com/

Safietou D. Russell, called 'Safie' by her clients, has always had a passion for numbers and business. In addition to obtaining her CPA, she is also an IRS Enrolled Agent and certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor. She is a graduate of SUNY Albany with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and a Master of Science Degree in Taxation from Florida Atlantic University.

Safie states, "My company's motto is simple - I work with small business owners from business formation to tax preparation and all the fun things in between. COVID-19 has changed the landscape for entrepreneurs.

Industries will have to reset, and owners will have to pivot and increase their budget to include mental health awareness and meditation practices for work-life balance. I want each business owner to succeed holistically by holding their hands, empowering them to streamline business, utilizing time management apps, hiring a bookkeeper, and educating them on their relationship with money; especially for Black-owned businesses. It can no longer be about just taxes if they are going to rebuild."

State Senators James Sanders Jr., Brian Benjamin and Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell Introduce Comprehensive Search Warrant Reform Legislation in New York State, With Campaign Zero

State Senators James Sanders Jr. and Brian Benjamin, along with Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell, today introduced a pioneering and comprehensive bill in the New York State Legislature that would restrict the use of dangerous No-Knock warrants and raids across the state. This legislation, developed in collaboration with Campaign Zero and police scholar Dr. Peter Kraska, will serve as a nationwide model for search warrant reform, addressing the systemic abuses that have cost lives, undermined trust, and caused incalculable damage across our state and country.

Senator Sanders' bill is S.11 for 2021. It is being carried by O'Donnell in the Assembly as bill number A.11171 for 2020 but it will have a new bill number in 2021.

State Senator James Sanders

In New York, a bill to reform how these warrants and raids are used has been languishing in the State Legislature for nearly two decades. Prompted by the unnecessary and tragic deaths of Breonna Taylor and others, these members of the State Senate and Assembly reignited this police accountability reform by introducing the boldest proposal yet that would regulate these military-like tactics used by police. This is also the first reform nationwide to receive 15 of 15 points using Campaign Zero’s model legislation rubric.

"We must stop the over-militarization of our communities," said Senator James Sanders Jr.  "The abuse of no-knock warrants disproportionally affects black and brown people and can often result in death as was seen in the tragic cases of Breonna Taylor, Alberta Spruill and too many others. Today, we are putting forth the most comprehensive, groundbreaking legislation in the nation when it comes to these police raids, which should only be used under extreme circumstances and with accountability."

The proposed bill will:
  • Restrict the issuance and execution of all No Knock warrants and raids by limiting them only to instances when human life is in jeopardy.
  • Increase the application requirements, requiring officers to report age/gender/known disabilities of all occupants.
  • Ensures warrants expire after 7 days and prevents the use of stale information (officers have to provide current evidence in the 24 hrs. before warrant execution). Breonna Taylor's evidence/surveillance was 60 days old when officers went to execute the warrant.
  • Add more specifics for how all warrants can be executed (i.e. officers required to be in uniform, must wait 30 seconds, and may not use flash bang grenades).
  • Add measures of oversight and accountability by making audio/video and warrant execution reports available for review by independent oversight.
  • “It’s hard to believe that anyone can argue that the public is well served by allowing armed officers to smash into a house out of the blue,” said State Senator Brian Benjamin. “How can this possibly be the safest way to arrest someone? We’ve seen hundreds like Breona Taylor killed or harmed because people decided that using these tactics was no big deal. We need to rein it in, and we need to do it now.”
