Kamau Austin Interviews Adrienne Watley, MA, MBA Part 1

Adrienne Whaley, MBA, MA, is at it again.  The passionate and resilient Southeast Queens, renaissance woman is relentless in her pursuit of harnessing a comprehensive cornucopia of the arts to empower and uplift the lives of residents in our area.  She has a degree in education, an MBA, and also has extensive certification and experience as a special education teacher.

Today I wanted to explore some of the martial arts programs she offers and how they can be of benefit to special needs children in particular and all children in general.  I have a daughter with special needs and can relate to their issues.

So If you have a child with ADD, ADHD, Autism, dyslexia, or other challenge let's learn how traditional Karate can help them.  Even if your child has none of these challenges it is still good to find out how the martial arts can help them.

It may seem ironic to some that Karate could help a child with special needs or any child.  So let's ask Adrienne her thinking in this regard...

National News - Television and movie mogul Tyler Perry, of Madea fame, has pledged $1 million dollars to help with Hurricane Harvey victims displaced and challenged by the brutal storm. He is very concerned about his donations getting into the right places and hands of people with "boots on the ground" according to Perry.

He is presently concerned about this because he alluded to giving a lot of money to Hurricane Katrina efforts but suggested some of his money wasn't utilized in the ways he had intended. He wants to make sure his money this time is going into the right hands.

I'm not a fan of prosperity preachers. I'm really more into the Churches, like the socially active ones we have in Southeast Queens, which support things like homeless shelters, 1st time buyers building complexes, food pantries, battered women's shelters, credit unions, senior citizen homes, and economic and social programs. Yes, they do exist in our area in ministries like Allen AME Cathedral, St. Albans Congregation Church, Bethany Baptist Church, and many others.

However, after seeing claims and counterclaims about Pastor Osteen's inability to help people seeking refuge in Houston I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Why you may ask?

El Barrio, NY – New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, elected officials and community leaders today rallied outside Central Park to demand the New York City Parks Department remove a patently offensive statue that pays tribute to a physician who conducted sadistic and horrifying medical experiments on enslaved Black women.

“El Barrio residents have waited long enough for the City to act,” said Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. “At a time when Neo-Nazis, white nationalists and hateful right wing extremists run rampant throughout the country with impunity, we must send a definitive message that the despicable acts of J. Marion Sims are repugnant and reprehensible. J. Marion Sims conducted horrific, painful, medical atrocities on non-anesthetized enslaved Black women with free-reign. Mayor de Blasio and the Parks Department must remove this repugnant statue from our neighborhood once and for all.”
