Nationwide -- LaDonna N. Smith knows what it's like to enter adulthood with no financial know-how. After many years of being tied down by debt and poor financial management, LaDonna learned the skills needed to turn her financial situation around.

Now, she's dedicated to empowering youth and young adults to make good financial choices. "Smart money management is a vital life skill, and it's never too early to start teaching children how to save and spend money.

BLACK HOUSEHOLDS ARE SAVING MONEY BY STREAMING THEIR TV CHANNELS

Nationwide -- USAstreamsTV, a Black-owned company, is using technology to help break barriers that have limited many African Americans from having affordable access to live network channels. USA Today reports that the average cable subscriber spends about $85 a month for cable and more than $100 a month for satellite TV.

USAstreamsTV's Marketing Director Joseph Scales says, "Technology is always changing and improving. Today many people are looking for ways to save money and cut the cord. The old days of accessing cable TV and digital media through hardwired devices like satellite dishes and bulky cable boxes are being replaced by more cost efficient online applications and easy plug and play devices like Amazons Firestick.

This allows the same content to be streamed directly to your tv, phones, tablets and laptops through IPTV also known as (Internet Protocol TV). The software technology we use today allows anyone around the globe to watch live TV through our streaming app as long as they have an internet/WIFI connection."

FOUNDER OF BLACK-OWNED HEALTH CLINIC CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF HELPING PATIENTS DEAL WITH PAIN

PT Works, an Atlanta-based clinic owned by HBCU graduate Teresa Bristol, offers holistic physical therapy to help patients manage chronic pain.

Atlanta, GA -- Offering a unique diversity of care by treating patients from birth to seniors as well as both common and rare conditions, PT Works offers holistic physical therapy services in its growing Atlanta office. Workshop in Business Opportunities, Inc. (WIBO) begins it’s 54th year of teaching their 16 weeks “How to Build a Growing Profitable Business” at Rochdale Village Community Center in Rochdale Village.

New York, NY September 3, 2019 -- Beginning Wednesday, September 18th, Rochdale Village Community Center, Workshop in Business Opportunities also referred to as WIBO, will launch their 54th year of workshops teaching new and existing entrepreneurs how to build profitable, successful businesses in 5 New York City locations.

WIBO helps individuals who want to build profitable businesses to provide for themselves and their families via their business. This often applies to:

  • women
  • individuals recently released from prisons
  • individuals from communities that lack access to knowledge, networks, and capital and
  • African Americans and Latinos trying to close the historic wealth gap.

Starting or growing a business is something that many people struggle with and this entrepreneurial workshop helps individuals overcome various obstacles as well as guide them to a successful path in starting or growing an existing business.

Workshop in Business Opportunities was developed in 1966 by Walter Geier and Mal Woolfolk to enable small business owners from underserved communities obtain financial success by starting, operating, and building successful businesses that develop economic power, provide jobs and improve communities.

Since the 1st workshop that graduated 12 African Americans in Harlem, WIBO has graduated more than 18,000 entrepreneurs where 75% of WIBO grad’s businesses were up and running within a year of taking the program, and 42% of businesses saw an increase in revenue after taking the WIBO program.  Some WIBO graduates are running their businesses for more than 25 years, a testament to how valuable the WIBO workshop is for its participants. 

The New York workshops are taught in:
  • Harlem (where WIBO began)
  • lower Manhattan
  • Brooklyn
  • Queens and
  • Bronx communities.

Some of the business building topics that entrepreneurs will experience during this 16-week course include:

  • how to conduct market research to identify ideal customers
  • promoting the business
  • making a profit
  • creating a pricing strategy and...
...other actionable and detailed steps that are excellent for a new or startup business. 

This semester new WIBO participants will take part in a new groundbreaking online course created as part of WIBO’s new Entrepreneur Mindset Program (EMP). WIBO’s EMP was developed to assist new entrepreneurs with developing the personal development skills and thinking needed to be successful in business.

The online course titled Training for Entrepreneur Success will lay the foundation for WIBO participants to grow successful companies by helping them enhance their strengths, identify and work on the habits that can negatively prevent them from being successful.

There is a cost associated with the workshops. However, WIBO offer scholarships to people who are earning less than $50,000, veterans, NYCHA residents, and individuals who have been recently incarcerated.

LABRENDA GARRETT-NELSON BECOMES THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN ELECTED AS PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD FOR CERTIFICATION OF GENEALOGISTS

Nationwide -- The Board for Certification of Genealogists is a nonprofit organization founded in 1964 as a professional credentialing body for genealogists. LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson is the first African American elected to lead the organization.

At its semi-annual meeting held on the 7th of September 2019 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Board of Trustees of the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG) elected officers for the coming year. Those elected were:

BLACK WOMAN-OWNED TECH FIRM LAUNCHES FOOTBALL TRAINING APP

Nationwide -- The Quarterback Equalizer, a unique gaming app created by a Black woman techpreneur named Kathy Tomlinson, is designed to teach football players (specifically quarterbacks) their position in a fun and cognitive way. The app, developed by her Dallas-based company, Equalizer Games LLC, allows players to transfer what they learn to the field.

"The Quarterback Equalizer is a game that addresses the need of fulfilling the off-field learning curve," says Kathy.

"I've spent more than 25 years as a football coach. In that time, I’ve seen the struggles that quarterbacks go through when juggling game plans, defensive pressures, and the speed of the game, all while trying to prepare for an opponent. The Quarterback Equalizer was created to equip and enforce the rules all quarterbacks should have in their mental make-up each time they drop back to pass. It’s all about his eyes!," says her husband, Coach John Tomlinson, who is CEO of Equalizer Games LLC.

LAW FIRM FOR DON LEMON ACCUSED OF RACISM AND 'POTENTIAL PERJURY'

Nationwide -- The law firm that represents CNN's Don Lemon - Pierce Bainbridge Beck Price & Hecht LLP - is being accused of running a "racially charged sham" investigation and "lying in sworn affidavits" to smear Don Lewis, a former partner who is African American. Lewis says he learned about shady financial dealings, said something to the boss, and was retaliated against through a nationwide smear campaign.

Putney Twombly Hall & Hirson LLP (Michael Yim) and Littler Mendelson PC (Sylvia Jeanine Conley) allegedly assisted with the vicious attack and are also being sued by Lewis. In this classic David v. Goliath battle, Lewis says the three law firms engaged in a conspiratorial cover-up.

GHANAIAN PRINCESS LAUNCHES HISTORIC TRADITIONAL AFRICAN RETURN OF THE ROYALS WEDDING IN DENVER, COLORADO
Denver, CO --  On September 28, 2018, His Excellency Ghana President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo launched the "Year of Return, Ghana 2019" inviting all peoples of African descent to come to visit Ghana. The Year of Return, Ghana 2019 is a historic tourism campaign targeting African Americans and the Diaspora and marking 400 years since the first enslaved African arriving in Jamestown, Virginia.

In addition to the Hon. U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and key members of the Congressional Black Caucus, celebrities including Danny Glover, Samuel Jackson, Colin Kaepernick, Boris Kodjoe, and Steve Harvey have visited Ghana as part of the U.S.A. 400 Years Commemoration of the first landing of Africans in America in August 1619.

Honoring this historic occasion, Her Excellency Rev. Dr. Princess Asie Kabuki Ocansey founded Royal Return Ghana, an enriching homecoming experience devoted to adopting African Americans into Ghanaian families. In honor of the African ancestors who were not allowed to marry during the first 250 years of U.S. slavery, Royal Return Ghana will bring 400 African American couples to the Motherland of Ghana to marry or renew their vows. As the princess of the Ocansey Royal Family of Ada, Ghana, she will also lead a renaming ceremony at the Royal Ocansey healing waters of Ada.
