CAMBRIA HEIGHTS, NY — Community Organizer James Johnson is hosting an Emergency Town Hall following growing concerns from residents regarding an NYPD operational plan associated with the annual Ohel pilgrimage that would restrict access to residential blocks in Cambria Heights from June 17 through June 21.
Residents say they were not fully informed about the scope of the plan and have expressed frustration over barricades being placed throughout residential streets and reports that homeowners may be required to show identification to access their own blocks.
The annual Ohel pilgrimage brings tens of thousands of visitors from around the world to Cambria Heights each year. Residents recognize the significance of the event and support efforts to maintain public safety. However, many believe there must be a better balance between managing a major event and respecting the rights of local homeowners.
