Girl loves desserts

National News - Dominique Shawn Norwood from South Orange-Maplewood, New Jersey, is a college student at William Paterson University, but she is also the CEO and Founder of Dom's Dessert Candles. Her company produces candles that look like delicious desserts - with delicious flavors that vary from strawberry shortcake to apple pie to banana cheesecake to peach cobbler and many more.

Dominique says that one of her cousins once gave her a hot chocolate candle as a gift, and it was like love at first sight. She comments, "I started to research the art of making candles that look like food. Within a few weeks, I purchased my first mold to create my first dessert candle ever - The Canned Peaches." The design looked just like a real can of peaches.

Classic Film Fridays – “The Birds”

The Birds is a modern Hitchcock thriller/masterpiece, his first film with Universal Studios. It is the apocalyptic story of a northern California coastal town filled with an onslaught of seemingly unexplained, arbitrary and chaotic attacks of ordinary birds – not birds of prey.

Enjoy Great Jazz and Exceptional Art Free Today in Southeast Queens

Today is a great day to enjoy great jazz and support the arts in Southeast Queens.  This is an exciting day that the Jamaica Avenue or "Downtown Jamaica" organizations, as it is being billed now, and jazz groups from more of the interior residential areas are coming together to synergistically promote events simultaneously.  This is a nice sign of things to come.

The St. Albans Jazz & R&B Festival will also take place at the same location as the St. Albans Craft Walk. The St. Albans Jazz Festival will take place starting at 4:30 pm.  The St. Albans Craft Walk will take place at 3pm.  The events location will be St. Albans Park, at Merrick Blvd., between 115th Ave & Sayers Ave.  These events look to draw thousands of people to our historic and rich neighborhoods which are of course legendary in the fields of jazz and the arts.

The St. Albans Jazz & R&B Festival - with feature Leon and the Peoples, Alyson Williams, La La And Dugard, Barlett Contemporaries, the Pre-View of the Hair Nation Expo, and be hosted by Kool Bubba Ice.

The St. Albans Craft Walk -  is sponsored by A Better Jamaica (http://www.abetterjamaica.org) and The Jamaica Arts Council (http://www.facebook.com/TheJamaicaArtsCouncil) will use the occasion to launch what we hope will become an annual event – The Saint Albans Craft Walk.

With just 10 or so artisan booths planned, this select group of artisans will range from painters to ceramicists to jewelry makers.  As they used to say back in da day "Be there or Be Square!"
Let's support jazz and the fine arts this weekend in Southeast Queens. We have some legendary jazz artists, musicians, rappers, and visual artists come from our area.
This is a great weekend to show our present support to jazz and visual artists in our community this weekend.

Black-Owned Coffee Shop

Café Neo opened in 2012 in Lagos, Nigeria, and was an overnight success. All it took was two very keen entrepreneurs (who are also brothers) to recognize the potential and capitalize on it.

Ngozi and Chijioke Dozie knew that coffee was a big business globally. They also knew that, in spite of the fact that Nigeria is the seventh largest coffee producing country in the world, Nigeria has very few coffee shops. It took the brothers 4 years to raise $400,000 to start their coffee shop, but they did it.

And now after three very successful years, Café Neo is now Nigeria’s largest and fastest-growing coffee chain with 10 upscale outlets in the city of Lagos.

A place for entrepreneurs to meet

Their coffee shops are much more than a place to grab a cup of joe. Being entrepreneurs themselves, the Dozie brothers designed the shops to offer free Wi-Fi, jazz music and space for other entrepreneurs to come together and share ideas. This is a big benefit to locals. As Ngozi explains, "If you try and work from home, there probably is no power, if you try to go to the hotel, it's not conducive."

The two founders have managed to be at the forefront of the coffee business in Nigeria by recognizing potential, successfully raising the needed capital, and expanding. They now own the market on coffee shops in Nigeria. They even beat Starbucks to the punch.

So what's next?

Currently, they serve cold drinks and hot drinks. Their menu includes: Bubble Tea, Caramel Frapuccino, Iced Cafe Mocha, Iced Caramel Latte, Caramel Macchiato, Espresso, Cafe Latte, and more. But they plan to add more to the menu including juices, and food.

Their ultimate goal for their company is to be "the best African coffees produced by Africans, drunk in Africa." Global expansion plans are in the works as well.
