By Kamau Austin

A 26-Year old Hollis, Queens, resident Desiree Gibbon, an aspiring model and filmmaker, who wanted to make cultural documentaries was found slain in a rural part of the island of Jamaica. Her throat was slashed according to news accounts and there were bruises on her body. Authorities at this point don't know if she was also sexually assaulted. She was staying at a family owned resort, according to the major media, to earn money to take a filmmaking course in Europe. According to CBS News, "Desiree Gibbon, 26, left her home in Hollis, Queens in October, and was staying at the family's resort in Montego Bay with the hopes of making a documentary. Chae Blount, the young Southeast Queens author who received local acclaim for writing 3 books by 8-years of age, is showing insight and concern beyond his years again by hosting a Holiday Toy Drive in our area.  His Toy Drive theme is "Giving Toys, Spreading Joy!"  We really appreciate his and his family's efforts for the following reasons...

With tough economic conditions for a diminishing middle class, losing ground in the US, many families don't have the means to give toys or gifts during the Christmas and Holiday season.  Some families have children with special challenges and economically are stressed.

The Holiday Toy Drive, is a great way to encourage a child to have an awesome Christmas and Holiday season, as a respite to less than favorable times.  Please join Chae, and other concerned residents in our community, to give toys or gifts while having a fun time December, 22nd, 2017, at 6PM, at the Venue, 224-03 Linden Boulevard, Cambria Heights, NY 11411.  Monetary donations and sponsorships are also welcomed.  Please call 718-810-3347 to RSVP or for Sponsorship Inquires.

It is being reported recently that Russell Simmons, a Southeast Queens legendary hip hop business mogul, is the latest powerful man with celebrity status to be accused of sexually abusing a woman. His accuser is Jenny Lumet.

According to an account by the BBC website Ms. Lumet, an accomplished screenwriter now, was forced to have sex with Simmons back "around 1991." The BBC claims "Jenny Lumet has said he directed his driver to take her to his apartment after she'd said she wanted to go home, before they had sex, around 1991."

The article further states she asked Russell's driver to take her home but Simmons told him "no" on a number of occasions and took her to his residence where a fearful Ms. Lumet was coerced to have sex with him. Mr. Simmons responded to the press "her memory of that evening is very different from mine." However, Russell Simmons did resign from his leading position with his company Rush Communications in light of the scandal.

Democratic Co-Lead Rep. Meeks Statement on
the Introduction of the ENOUGH Act

Washington, D.C.—Congressman Meeks released the below statement after Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) and U.S. Senators Kamala D. Harris (D-CA), Richard Burr (R-NC), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) yesterday introduced the Ending Nonconsensual Online User Graphic Harassment Act or the ENOUGH Act, of which Congressman Meeks is a Democratic Co-Lead and original cosponsor. Regarding the bill, which would criminalize the sharing of private, explicit images without the subject’s consent, Congressman Meeks said the following:

“In this digital age, people can become victims of sexual harassment in an instant, turning their whole lives upside down. Four years ago, Rep. Jackie Speier and I first began working on federal legislation to address the problem of nonconsensual pornography. Since then, thirty-five states have enacted statutes to combat this heinous practice. Statutes differ from state to state and unfortunately, the adoption of such laws has not been ubiquitous. It is therefore up to Congress to step in and enact a federal law finally criminalizing nonconsensual pornography.

“Law enforcement organizations, women’s rights groups, family issues organizations, technology companies, and academics all agree: the victims of “revenge porn,” “sextortion,” and other forms of heinous nonconsensual pornography deserve a federal fix. That is why I am proud to join Congresswoman Speier’s effort to finally criminalize—at the federal level—the practice of non-consensual explicit image sharing as the House Democratic Co-Lead and an original cosponsor of the ENOUGH Act.

“This act would not only establish criminal punishment for these serious privacy violations, but would also do so in specific and narrow ways that would respect the First Amendment and civil liberties.  In our digital world, it is crucial we enact new laws that both protect our rights as citizens and the safety of our private content.”

Some of the largest Black, women, and minority companies in the world became successful from getting contracts with national, state, and local governments.  For instance the largest Black company in the US: Worldwide Technologies, is a multibillion dollar privately held company.  It became a big business largely due to getting contracts with various levels of the government.

Blacks, women, and minorities are levied hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes a year.  Therefore, it is only fair that the government also provide fair opportunities for businesses of Blacks, women, and minority citizens.  Also in Southeast Queens there will be a $10 Billion dollar investment in JFK International Airport.

We are happy that NYS Senator James Sanders Jr. is stepping up to help Southeast Queens residents who are women, Blacks, or other ethnic minorities get a fair shot at winning lucrative government contracts.  If you are a Black, women, Latino, or other ethnic minority entrepreneur you owe it to yourself to learn about the competitive bidding and government contracting or procurement process at this event. This is called the Minority Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) Procurement Fair...

According to a report from NY-1, on Friday, 11.24.17, two FDNY EMTs noticed that residents of a Laurelton home, they were called to, seemed to be exhibiting symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning.  Upon testing the levels in the house they realized that CO levels were dangerously high inside the home of the 4 residents.

Without hesitation both EMTs removed all residents from the Laurelton house, after realizing the CO levels were six times higher than the normal levels for humans.  It is further reported that the problem within the residence was a faulty boiler.
