Op-Ed: Technology Empowers Black Business Owners. Supporting Innovation Will Keep Them Competitive.

August marked National Black Business Month, a time to celebrate the resilience, contributions, and success of Black entrepreneurs. As President Calvin Coolidge once said, “the chief business of the American people is business.”

This is as true today as it was nearly a century ago — and it holds for every American, especially the Black community. Black-owned business creation is surging. From 2017 to 2022, the number of businesses owned by a Black entrepreneur increased by nearly 57%. During those years, at least half of the new businesses were Black-owned.

The US Census estimates that Black entrepreneurs own 3.5 million businesses with an annual payroll of $40.5 billion.

Technology is fueling this boom in entrepreneurship and tearing down barriers. That’s especially true of artificial intelligence.

But to fully unlock AI’s economic potential, policymakers need to ensure that business owners and the workforce of the future are properly equipped to succeed. Albany and Washington should focus on investing in education and workforce training –– and resisting legislation and regulations that stifle rather than support our local innovators.

The Queens Carnival Is Still Rocking For The Caribbean After 7-Years In
Far Rockaway

Where do you celebrate a Caribbean Carnival in Queens? On the longest big-city beach in the United States, the 7-miles of beach on the Atlantic Ocean, on the Rockaway Peninsula in Downtown Far Rockaway.

The Queens Carnival, formerly the Rockaway Caribbean Carnival, now in its 7th year is a full day of free, family-friendly fun. On the 2nd to the last Saturday in August, the weekend before Labor Day, State Senator James Sanders, Jr. (D-NY), Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corporation (RDRC), REMA 4US, New York Career Training School, City Councilmember Selvena Brooks-Powers and State Assemblyman Khaleel Anderson bring the Caribbean to Queens.

On Saturday, August 23rd, the festivities began at Jamaica Bay and ended on the sands of the Atlantic Ocean. The paint and powder jump-up, kiddie masqueraders from Jewel Jewel kicks off the Carnival in Bayswater Park (7-01 Bay 32nd Street). That starts the parade down the streets of Far Rockaway. Floats filled with friends and supporters are stacked with speakers that fill the air with merengue, reggae, soca, mas, calypso, reggaeton, zouk, ska, dance hall, parang, pichakaree, rapso, punta, cumbia, bouyon, bachata, baithak, gana and bachata.

This NYC neighborhood attempted to forbid African Americans from buying property, and stories like these helped to outlaw segregation nationwide.

Here’s the story of the Queens suburban enclave of Addisleigh Park, where it became home of some of the most famous black Americans in the 20th century!

To clarify: while the racially restrictive property deeds of Addisleigh Park didn’t lead directly to the Shelley vs Kraemer case, the previous failed attempts to overturn the racial covenants in New York State court did play a role in the eventual Supreme Court ruling.

SENATOR COMRIE BACKS LEGISLATION TO PROTECT NEW YORKERS FROM UNFAIR BUSINESS PRACTICES

Queens, NY — Senator Leroy Comrie is proud to sponsor the FAIR Business Practices Act legislation introduced by Attorney General Letitia James aimed at modernizing New York’s consumer protection laws and holding bad business actors accountable. 

The bill would update a law that hasn’t been meaningfully changed in over 37 years. It gives the Attorney General’s office and everyday New Yorkers more tools to stop companies from using misleading, abusive, or flat-out unfair business tactics, like hidden junk fees, scams that target non-English speakers, or shady subscription models that are nearly impossible to cancel. 

“The laws on the books haven’t kept up with how business is done today,” said Senator Comrie. “New Yorkers deserve clear protections and the ability to get relief when they’ve been taken advantage of. This bill brings us in line with nearly every other state and gives people the power to get restitution.”
