THE NONSEMBLE PRESENTS [UP]RISING: AN AFRO-FUTURE HER-STORY

Los Angeles, CA --  On Sunday, August 11, 2019, Academy Award-winning actor Don Cheadle will take a step away from his prolific role as an actor and activist to host [UP]Rising: An Afro-Future Her-Story, an incredible night of international jazz at the Ford Theatres in Hollywood. Two of South Africa's top women in jazz, Siya Makuzeni, a world-renowned trombonist and vocalist and Thandi Ntuli, a multi-talented keyboardist and singer-songwriter, will perform in commemoration of South Africa's National Women's Day.

These powerful, creative women will be flanked on the Ford stage with some of Los Angeles' own creative treasures, including Georgia Anne Muldrow, who will perform music from an ongoing underground project with Thandi and The Katalyst Collective, a local ensemble comprised of nine of the most talented and fast-rising jazz musicians in Los Angeles.

"South Africa's National Women's Day seems a perfect opportunity to cheer... for freedom, for the motherland, for mothers, sisters, daughters and for all women," said event host Don Cheadle.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Siya Makuzeni is a world-renowned trombonist, vocalist and producer, who has also been a creative force with several of her own genre-defying bands. Siya's music is laced with urban soul, rock and electronic underground influences following a through-line of traditional Xhosa melody and rhythm, with each element soaked in passion.

Thandi Ntuli is a dynamic band leader in her own right. The multi-talented keyboardist and singer-songwriter exploded onto the jazz scene with instant recognition and acclaim with her layered melodies revealing both vulnerability and deep, abiding strength. Her second release helped to reinforce her position as one of South Africa's contemporary musical powerhouses.

ABOUT SOUTH AFRICA'S NATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
National Women's Day is a South African public holiday celebrated annually on August 9th. The day commemorates the 1956 march of approximately 20,000 women to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to petition against the country's pass laws that required South Africans defined as "black" under The Population Registration Act to carry an internal passport, known as a pass, that served to maintain population segregation, control urbanization, and manage migrant labor during the apartheid era. The first National Women's Day was celebrated on August 9, 1994. (Wikipedia)
