Grilled Chicken and Shrimp at Vibes Restaurant
Today is "Soul Food Sundays" at the Southeast Queens Scoop.  This is an update and remix on an article we did about 3 months back.  Southeast Queens, restaurants are starting to come on strong.  While Harlem is known for it's outstanding soul food restaurants like Amy Ruth's, Chocolat, Mintons, and the legendary Silvias - Southeast Queens is no slouch when it comes to ethnic cuisine and cultural culinary arts.

We have a number of emerging savory soul food eateries that won't disappoint when it comes to serving up the real deal in southern comfort foods.  While there are a good number of these eateries springing up in the area, these 7 standout as soul food places in Southeast Queens we feel confident suggesting to our readers.

Enjoy Soul Food At 7 Standout Southeast Queens Restaurants

Grilled Chicken and Shrimp at Vibes Restaurant
Today is "Soul Food Sundays" at the Southeast Queens Scoop.

1. Vibe Restaurant - This is a trendy attractive soul food spot on Liberty Avenue. We hope it becomes as well known as some of the Uptown and Brooklyn soul food restaurants.

It has a creative ambience and nice presentation of food with some artistic updated versions of traditional soul food staples.  Vibe is located at:
143-06 Liberty Ave, Jamaica, NY 11435. To checkout their website is click here .  For more info: See our full review

Smoke BBQ Pit Burgers & Fries
2. Smoke BBQ Pit - This restaurant has a combination of modern jumbo screens but still owns a down home BBQ feel to it too.  The food is tasty southern food and the atmosphere is relaxed.

The service is also pretty good at this restaurant.  The address is:
129-21 Merrick Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11434. Checkout the website click here . There phone number is: (718) 341-6100

3. Thomasina's Catering Hall (for Sunday Brunch) - this is an attractive catering hall that does great Sunday brunches.  The Sunday brunch foods usually features soul food staples like fried fish and chicken, yams, collard greens, and salad.

This establishment usually showcases live entertainment and they have nice desserts as well during Sunday Brunches. The address is:
205-35 Linden Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11412.

You can reach Thomasina's website for more info if you just click here. Also to read a full review on Thomasina's Catering Hall's Sunday brunches click here.

4. Burgundy Cafe - Is a small quaint soul food place with tasty soul food on Hillside Avenue near Parsons Blvd. It is small but we suspect they do a good delivery business because the food is very satisfying.

If you are around Jamaica Avenue, and want to get some good soul food, after shopping or cultural events, you have to checkout this compact soulfood enclave. It does have a few seats.  The food is good.

This spot just shows "good things really do come in small packages."  The address is: 153-35 Hillside Avenue, Jamaica, NY 11432. Call: (347) 475-0187

5. Maxine's Takeout - This is a very good soul food spot.  And probably it is the go to takeout place for soul food in the St. Albans, Queens area.  It has a few places to sit but is primarily a takeout place.  We don't think they deliver even with Uber Eats yet.

You can call to find out.  They have a good deal with their 4 piece chicken dinners with two sides.  Also their chicken wings dishes are superb.  This is a great place to order.  Their address is:
113-33 Farmers Blvd, St. Albans, NY 11412.  Call (718) 465-9812.

6. Austin's Nothing Fried - Is a healthy option on soul food that just opened up on Linden Blvd, in St. Albans.  They do soul food but without the frying.

It has a nice decor and seating for maybe a dozen people or more.  We like them because they offer us healthy options with soul food.  We wish them well. Their address is: 196-11 Linden Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11412.  Call:  (347) 894-9058

The Juice Bar at Vital Health Foods
7. Vital Health Foods (Juice Bar) -  This is our wild card on soul food.  It offers vegetarian spin offs on cultural dishes that are staples in the Caribbean, soul food, and classic American foods styles.

They have vegetarian burgers, fish, chicken and ribs vegan dishes and other healthy food choices.  If you are a vegetarian, vegan, or just healthy eater you have to try their juice bar stocked with nutritious foods and beverages.  For more info on Vital please Read our full review

Their address is: 196-14 Linden Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11412. Their phone number is: (718) 525-0992.

We will be doing more detailed soul food reviews of these and other restaurants and eateries in the area in the future.  So stay tuned or join our email list.

A Soul Food Revival Spreads in Jamaica Queens

January 20th 2014, Jamaica, Queens - Across the street from one of south Queens' most progressive and largest mega-churches Allen AME Cathedral, is a soulful epicenter of a different sought. Directly across the street on Merrick Boulevard is the home of A Plate of Soul Restaurant. Although South Queens has other soul food eateries, which are mostly takeout places, A Plate of Soul, also offers a cozy cultural inspired ambience. The owners of A Plate of Soul restaurant have roots in the legendary Silvia's Restaurant and soul food franchise.

Nikko Holman, one of the owner operators of A Plate of Soul, is the grandson of pioneering restaurateur Silva of the eponymous Silvia's Restaurant fame. Mr. Holman ironically is low key and unassuming about his mom's legacy in that he is determined to create his own reputation and brand in the restaurant service industry. Nikko can be seen many evenings, like other savvy restaurant owners, mixing it up with patrons and engaging in uplifting conversations with guests.

A Plate of Soul Restaurant sports a cultural interior which embodies a positive testament to African- American culture. The waiters are friendly and courteous. The restaurant has some refreshing and tasty drinks they offer like the half-and-half: half lemonade and half iced tea. A Plate of Soul, really makes its mark cooking traditional soul food favorites like fried chicken, yams, collard greens, and fish and chips dishes with savory flourish. They're known for making staple dishes from the African American palette while preparing meals with the aplomb of being crispy and not greasy. Unlike many soul food restaurants A Plate of Soul even makes a very delightful turkey burger.

Also a great dessert to treat yourself to is the red velvet cake and peach cobbler. It is nice to see a revival of tasty soul food in the area where you can relax and converse with friends or loved ones in a nice cozy atmosphere. A Plate of Soul's arrival and future success bodes well for upward moving success in the economic development of South Jamaica Queens. A Plate of Soul is located at 110-46 Merrick Blvd. Jamaica, NY 11433. For business hours contact 718-880-1337. The Restaurant's menu can be seen at http://www.PlateofSoul.com.

A nice new place for comfy soul food is Siblings Best Restaurant, at 187-30 Linden Blvd, St. Albans, NY 11412.   It is a nice quaint restaurant that sells soul food.  It does breakfast foods all day.

I enjoyed their waffles and turkey bacon.  I've eaten there a couple of times and the food is good and service is very good.  The owners are amiable.

While there are nice soul food spots in Southeast Queens many don't have comfortable seating. However Siblings Best is cozy and not usually crowded for seating yet.

Thomasina's Catering Hall, a local reception hall dining space, in St. Albans, Queens, is having a Sunday Brunch on Mother's Day.  Thomasina's is known in the community for hosting upscale tasteful catering events for families and organizations in the area.  Thomasina's is located at: 205-35 Linden Blvd, Jamaica, NY 11412.

We enjoy eating at the Sunday Brunches at Thomasina's Catering Hall.  The staff is very amiable.  The food selection is a wide selection of ethnic and soul food staples like fried chicken, collard greens, sweet potatoes, baked chicken, fried and baked fish and much more.

The salads and desserts are very good too.  They also feature live gospel jazz and other entertainment.  One of our favorites is the collard greens seasoned with turkey.  This dish is probably the best I've tasted at an ethnic or soul food dining establishment.

BBQ And Soul Food Is Soaring At "House Of Smoke!"

By Kamau Austin

Near the Historic mural of the legends of St. Albans, is a new promising BBQ and soul food establishment called the "House of Smoke."  The House of Smoke is poised to soar in its reputation for tasty BBQ and soul food and is a family business run by the Eagle family.  The Eagles, are a family of long time residents in the Southeast Queens area.

The family, like a lot of our families, has southern roots.  The recipes come from the grandmother of the family and she has a good touch for soul food.

The Eagles tell me their speciality is BBQ ribs.  They also offer BBQ Chicken and fish like Whiting, Tilapia, and Shrimp.
