HBCU-FOCUSED ENTREPRENEURS LAUNCH FREE VIRTUAL BLACK BUSINESS EVENT ON SATURDAY, MAY 15TH

Through their continued efforts of elevating the Black community, a group of Black entrepreneurs is facilitating a virtual conference for Black men and women in business. The 2021 Urban Business Assembly will focus on marketing, finance, health and wellness, as well as business fundamentals that can be incorporated into multiple careers and entrepreneurial aspects.

The May 15th event is a part of a contribution series that the entrepreneurs have launched to cultivate positive and resourceful experiences to inspire Black leaders. Their initial project was the Step into Greatness Scholarship for HBCU students. However, in their continued commitment, they have worked to integrate more resources that will assist both current and future Black leaders.

The event's sponsors include result-oriented companies such as owners Wesley Jacques of Blue Drem, a Digital Marketing agency; Zevi and Lauren Lacey, the founders of Urban Business Directory; Infinite 7 CEO Gia Mac; and Ashley Johnson, owner of Vegan Chef Ash. The Urban Business Assembly will be filled with gems of information from first-hand businessmen and women that have experienced years of success and even failures that have allowed them to learn valuable lessons and teach other entrepreneurs from their past business mistakes. The theme promoted throughout the program will be to encourage attendees to Step into Your Greatness while advancing their entrepreneurial endeavors.

BOOK REVEALS THE TRUE STORY OF LISS, AN ENSLAVED WOMAN WHO HELPED TURN GEORGE WASHINGTON'S SPY INTO AN ABOLITIONIST

Nationwide  Lyons Press is proud to announce the release of Espionage and Enslavement in the Revolution (240 pages • 978-1-4930-5247-9 • $25.95 • Hardback) by Claire Bellerjeau and Tiffany Yecke Brooks. In January 1785, a young African American woman named Elizabeth was put on board the Lucretia in New York Harbor, bound for Charleston, where she would be sold to her fifth master in just twenty-two years.

Leaving behind a small child she had little hope of ever seeing again, Elizabeth was faced with the stark reality of being sold south to a life quite different from any she had known before. She had no idea that Robert Townsend, a son of the family she was enslaved by, would locate her, safeguard her child, and return her to New York—nor how her story would help turn one of America’s first spies into an abolitionist. Robert Townsend is best known as one of George Washington’s most trusted spies, but few know about how he worked to end slavery.

From Of The Office Of NYS Senator Leroy Comrie

NYS Senator Leroy Comrie

I joined with my colleagues Council Members I. Daneek Miller and Selvena Brooks-Powers to celebrate the grand opening of a new vegan Caribbean soul food restaurant and pizzeria - Real Veggie Café - in South Jamaica. Led by Chef Hulando Shaw, Real Veggie Café will be a first-of-its-kind restaurant in Southeast Queens.

The celebration of this small business grand opening comes as small businesses citywide embark on a post-COVID-19 rebound. Chef Hulando worked throughout the pandemic to address food insecurity by donating sustainable and healthy food options for seniors, first responders, and families in need along with organizations like Southeast Queens U.P. Front and Queens Together.

Governor Cuomo Signs NYS Senator Leroy Comrie/O’Donnell Pass Bill Restoring the Vote to People on Parole

This new law confirms New York’s standing as leader in voting rights just as state legislatures across the country restrict access to the ballot box

NEW YORK—Today, Governor Cuomo signed legislation (S830/A4448) sponsored by Senator Leroy Comrie and Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell that will automatically restore voting rights to formerly incarcerated individuals convicted of a felony. The new law is the latest in a series of steps that New York has taken to change its antiquated voting laws, which just a few years ago were among the most restrictive in the country.

Felony disenfranchisement is a relic of Jim Crow America, so there is no need to wonder why it disproportionately impacts people of color and the poor.” said NYS Senator Leroy Comrie. “We can no longer stand by and allow poverty to be criminalized. I commend my colleagues in government for helping us to codify into law the access to vote for the formerly incarcerated.

ARMY SERGEANT DESIGNS STREET WEAR FITNESS BRAND THAT CATERS TO FITNESS HIP-HOP ENTHUSIASTS

Kyle Harvey is a pioneer bringing together what for many is two divergent lifestyles.  The visionary and innovator is merging the fitness lifestyle with an unlikely partner: hip hop!

Finding the right out of the box, urban streetwear with a fitness theme is something many of us never knew existed. Rack Runners, a fitness-driven, urban-style clothing line, by Kyle Harvey, 35, a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, was created in 2017.

Rack Runners sells a variety of merchandise including t-shirts, joggers, hoodies, eBooks, and fitness accessories. Since launching, Rack Runners has amassed 10k followers on Facebook and Instagram, also being hand-selected by Facebook to be one of 1,300 members of the Boost Facebook Leaders Network.

Harvey, an Ohio native & Washington, DC area resident, fully opened the Rack Runners online shop after 3 years of finding a niche and working diligently towards quality, research, and development. “Nobody, to my knowledge, has ever combined, streetwear, hip-hop culture, the love of food, and fitness together.

This is what I feel makes my brand unique. There are not just checks or stripes on a shirt. Plenty of time, thought, and creativity went into building this vision. I spent many hours drawing designs from my phone, so it motivates me when I see people wearing my clothes,” Harvey says.

I was able recently to convince the busy entrepreneur to spend some time with me to talk about his goals, insights, and past struggles.  Checkout his exclusive interview below...

NYS Senator James Sanders Jr.’s Statement on the Guilty Verdict in the Derek Chauvin Trial
State Senator James Sanders said: “This is the first time in my lifetime that I have seen a white police officer convicted of killing a black man. I think justice has been served to a degree.

As a first time offender Police Officer Derek Chauvin may only get 12 ½ years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, and that is not nearly enough time.

He took the life of an innocent, unarmed human being. I think that today we have seen a strike against the racism that exists in our country particularly as it relates to law enforcement and black and brown people. However, we must continue to fight. The battle is not over.

This is one small victory. There will be many more victories needed before we see true change. I applaud the jurors and the prosecutors in this case for accomplishing a tough job indeed.”
