New York State Senator James Sanders Jr. and Assemblymember Chantel Jackson Call on Governor Kathy Hochul to Sign Reparations Legislation During Panel Discussion in the Bronx

(New York, NY) Senator James Sanders Jr., Chair of the NY State Senate Select Majority Task Force on Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises, and Assemblymember Chantel Jackson called on Governor Kathy Hochul to sign reparations legislation into law during a Panel Discussion entitled “The Road to Reparations” on Friday night, September 22, 2023, at the Crawford United Methodist Church located at 3757 White Plains Road, Bronx, New York 10469. The event was hosted by Assemblymember Chantel Jackson. The event was free and open to the public.

The panel discussed the need for reparations and explained the legislation (S.1163-A/SANDERS Same as A.7691/Solages) that would establish a reparations commission. Sponsors of the event included the following: U.S. Representative Jamaal Bowman; Senator James Sanders Jr., Senator Jamaal Bailey; Assemblymember Chantel Jackson, and NYC Council Member Kevin Riley.

Senator James Sanders Jr. said, “For New York and America to move forward, we must finally address the evils of slavery and discrimination against African Americans in an open, honest, comprehensive, and just way. The legislation that Assemblymember Michaelle Solages and I have introduced would begin this process by establishing the New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies. Governor Kathy Hochul must take the next step toward justice by signing the bill into law. How loud must we shout until we are heard? The cry for justice cannot be loud enough.”

LOCAL ORGANIZATION COMPLETE GIRLZ, INC. CELEBRATES 7 YEARS AND HOST FREE SELF-ESTEEM WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG GIRLS IN THE COMMUNITY 

JAMAICA, NY - With a mission of empowering young women within the community, the non- profit organization, Complete Girlz, Inc. will be celebrating their 7th year anniversary on October 13, 2023. This year CGI will host a special Self-Esteem Workshop entitled,”I am Completely Beautiful” on October 21st!

We are excited to have our guest speaker Maxine Cesar “Miss Grand Tri-State.”  The host will be our very own Asia Lee, The New Yorker of the Week!

This amazing workshop will be hosted in more than one borough, strengthening positive affirmations along with self-imaging and much more.

The workshop is designed to break-down the stigmas of self-confidence in a way for the girls to understand so they can initiate their own road to healing and success.  “They truly care and they designed the classes especially with us in mind [Complete Girlz, Inc.] They are awesome!

“They encouraged me to love myself and love the skin that I am in,” said Complete Girlz, Inc. workshop participant, Simone Harper Youth of the year for 2023.

Happy National Daughters Day nZinga

I just saw from a Facebook friend that today is National Daughter's Day. I have to SHOUT Out my daughter and Co-Publisher Nzinga-l Austin!

What a blessing she is to me.

When we brought her home from the hospital she was quiet the first night but after that would cry/scream at the top of her voice/lungs - for 8 hours straight! We'd have pick her up and walk with her until she'd fall asleep.

She'd fall asleep for 40 minutes or so then get up and scream and cry for another 6 or 7 hours straight. Her mom and me would walk around like zombies we were so exhausted.

We struggled over the years finding her the right schools, helping her deal with bullying and teasing by other kids, and her depression and suicidal thoughts. She and we have been thru a lot.

However, today she is 24 and although still has challenges she is a talented artist, writer, singer, and award winning blogger and community advocate. I'd never believe that with how hard I had to teach my daughter things she now teaches me things, helps me in our business, and gives me good advice.

Her life illustrates to me peeps don't give up. God is still in the miracle business! 

I don't understand why God does or allows certain things, but I can truly say having to help raise my daughter has made me a better person. I feel blessed God entrusted her soul to us.

Free Fare Access For
The Q4 Bus Starts
September 24th 2023

In Queens

“A win in the NYS 2023 Budget was the Fare-Free Pilot Program with the MTA, which allocates a free bus line for each borough, is finally here,” said Assembly Member Alicia L. Hyndman. “Beginning Sunday, September 24, 2023, Southeast Queens will benefit from this pilot program with the Q4 line servicing Jamaica, St Albans and Cambria Heights. The program will last from six to twelve months and will be a relief to constituents in every borough.”

“Starting September 24th, the launch of the fare-free Q4 Local/Limited bus line in Queens will showcase the feasibility of no-cost transit for New York City bus commuters. It is my hope the success of this city-wide pilot program will inform how we can better work with all our partners in government to make life in New York City more affordable," said State Senator Leroy Comrie. "I must especially thank my colleagues in the legislature for their advocacy during the budget process, and the MTA and NYC Transit leadership for the willingness to test this pilot program."

“We are excited that the commuters in our district will take advantage of the free bus program,” said Assembly Member Clyde Vanel. “We will continue to work to improve our transportation system.”

“The housing crisis that has exacerbated homelessness and made our city less affordable demands comprehensive solutions. We welcome Mayor Adams and City Planning’s encouraging and thoughtful proposals as a starting point towards critical changes that will help us equitably produce more housing across the city to confront these challenges.

Housing and zoning policies have historically furthered economic and racial segregation, deepened inequities, and locked communities out of opportunities. That’s why it is imperative that our city’s policies and zoning align to achieve housing growth through the lens of equity and access, accompanied by investments in economic opportunity, schools, transit, healthcare, and other institutions that help stabilize communities.

“The Council is committed to advancing the necessary changes through a citywide text amendment and complementary strategies, including my Fair Housing Framework and increased affordability, to confront our housing crisis. We look forward to conducting a thorough review of the proposals in these preliminary scoping documents and continuing discussions with the Administration and all stakeholders throughout this process to successfully advance the city’s housing needs.

Delivering results for New Yorkers will require actions at the city level, along with essential contributions from our state and federal partners.”

Cheryl Caddle is a staunch advocate who is committed to working on behalf of her community.

Integrating a passion for education with solid business expertise in leadership, Ms. Caddle successfully launched a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in 2009. Through her tenacity, empowerment, accountability and achievement, her goal was to provide out-of-school services to elementary students, and as Executive Director of Community Youth Care Services, Ms. Caddle is responsible for the overall operations, regulatory compliance and policy development of the organization, as well as reporting to the board of directors.

Over the past 10 years, the services offered have evolved to include elementary students’ exposure to the aviation industry, and middle and high school students’ access to community service learning and work readiness coaching.
