Queens Resident Fashions Functional Clothing for People with Challenges

Kevin Henry does not let being in a wheelchair cramp his style.  Mr. Henry has overcome a terrible tragedy that may have fashioned a sideline existence for many people. But not Mr. Henry.  Kevin was shot by accident in a violent encounter between two other people.

However, he did not succumb to his wounds or let his permanent injury sideline his life. Today Kevin designs clothes for people with disabilities.  Henry also goes to Queensborough Community College. The name of his clothing line is "Kmatikz."

Kevin because of his disability realized that it is very difficult to find clothing that is easy for people with disabilities to wear and get dressed.  Henry also discovered, from his personal experience, that most of the clothing made for people with physical challenges looked a bit like clothes you'd see people wearing in a nursing home.  He felt most people with physical challenges wouldn't want to wear this type of clothing.

Therefore, Henry, an industrial design student, went to work fashioning a clothing line that is both stylish and functional. He represents a person who didn't let personal tragedy sideline his life. Henry states "If you fall down, just get back up. Even if you don't physically get back up but you can still enjoy your life, you can still live your life to the fullest.” 

You have to respect this person, in our community, who inspires us to rise beyond our personal circumstances and contribute to the betterment of the community.  Henry is working hard to get grants and win business competitions to launch his startup company. Jazz UP Your Memorial Day in Southeast Queens!

This has been an incredible year for showcasing diverse global talent at Jackson Room, an increasingly popular family friendly jazz and entertainment spot in St. Albans, Queens. They have some great jazz musicians from all over the world perform in Southeast Queens.  They have featured great Brazilian and South American jazz at Jackson Room.

Jackson Room offers world class jazz in the Southeast Queens community.  Jackson Room is run by respected jazz musician and business mogul Ed Jackson.  Jackson has diverse guess jazz groups but also heads his namesake group The Ed Jackson Quartet. 

The quartet had an incredible house performance last month with the timely reuniting of the Ed Jackson Quartet after a few months showcasing quest performers.  The Jackson Room audience were energized and electric as some patrons even danced to the jazz stylings.

"We thank supporters like you for coming out and supporting the quartet once again.  This month we are celebrating the 1st major Summer holiday: Memorial Day" states Ed Jackson.  Ed reflects "it is a time to take pause and remember the ultimate sacrifices of our loved ones in the armed forces."  Many people will spend time with their families during this weekend in Jamaica, Queens.

Young People in Southeast Queens Use Art to Beautify the Community.

Artist, Mural Creator and Art Instructor Jocelyn Morgan-Goode

Children in Southeast Queens, are learning to paint while beautifying their neighborhood. They are drawing beautiful murals to make the community look more attractive.  Southeast Jamaica, Queens, has long been known for striking murals.

Children affiliated with Culture Cocoa Art House, learn to paint murals that represent real people or even cartoonish type characters.  They presently are drawing over the walls in the Cornerstone Community Center building, to make the community look artsy.  According to Queens NY-1 News "The program was started by Jocelyn Morgan-Goode, an artist known for painting hip hop murals throughout South Jamaica."

We love their efforts to learn and also beautify the community. These children are learning a new creative skill and also helping increase the quality of life in Jamaica and Southeast Queens.  For information on this mural beautification program click here

Lena Horne a Southeast Queens Legend

Historic Beauty: the Iconic Diva Pioneer Lena Horne. Ms. Horne was also a young performer in the Cotton Club at 16. She was quite a progressive political thinker and had bit and later larger parts in Hollywood films like the 1943 films "Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather."

During the Red Scare years she was blacklisted in Hollywood because of her purported leftest beliefs. Therefore she was unable to get work in Hollywood during that period. However, she was creative and later in her life created her own work like her "Broadway musical one-woman show, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music," which ran for more than three hundred performances on Broadway." She attended the original "March On Washington." And her career spanned over 70 years in film, television, and Broadway. Ms. Horne was born in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, and owned a home in the historic Black community of Addisleigh Park, in St. Albans one of the last African American communities in NYC yet to go through intense gentrification. Lena Horne exuded Historic Beauty inside and out. RIP

The most uplifting story in Southeast Queens last Year.

The year in review. What I feel is the most important post of the year. A grassroots group proactively works in South Jamaica, a tough area of NYC to help end shootings for 365 days! Wow! This is inspiring let's stop the violence peeps.

NY State Senator James Sander Jr.

On Veteran's Day, we remember the brave men and women of our armed forces who have defended our country and sacrificed so much to protect our freedom. As a proud Marine Corps veteran, I would like to thank my fellow service members for responding to the call of duty. Please know that I support you and stand in solidarity with you, not just on Veteran's Day, but every day. May God Bless Our Veterans and God Bless America.

We must separate 2 things: going to war, and serving in the military. The 1st is the province of elected officials (and often the media). The 2nd is your son's and daughters, who through patriotism or the poverty draft, serve in the armed forces.

If we feel that any particular war is unjust, then protest it, and elect politicians who uphold your will. When your sons, daughters, fathers and mothers come home, welcome them back from a man-made hell. Just one Marine talking.

Today i take a group of formerly homeless and hospitalized veterans to a great restaurant where we will break bread and talk of life. i will be listening as to how my office can aid them as they recover. As a veteran of the U.S.M.C., i understand their struggle to come home because THERE BUT THE GRACE OF GOD, GO I.
