Representative. Gregory Meeks

Washington, D.C.—Ranking Democrat on the Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats Subcommittee, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks, released the following statement on today’s federal indictments of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and former Trump deputy campaign manager Rick Gates:

“Today’s indictment of the former campaign manager of the sitting President proves that, in the United States of America, no one is above the law. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has already uncovered wrongdoing and it should continue without interference, as should the congressional investigations into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.

“As a former Assistant District Attorney, I am well-aware that the aim of these investigations is to discover illegal activity already committed. Yet, we still need a bipartisan commission to determine how the Kremlin interfered in our election and how we can protect our democracy from Russian mingling moving forward. This should be a non-partisan issue, as the sanctity, foundation, and future of our democracy is at stake.”

Attorney Patrick Cotter
Kamau Austin, Publisher of The Southeast Queens Scoop feels  "The alleged interference and derailing of a US election by outside parties should be taken seriously by all Americans and investigated on a bipartisan basis although popular response to this information seems to be lining up along party lines.  Outside interference is a treat to the sovereignty of American Democracy."

Moreover, as reported in the Washington Post, the recent indictments are meant to send a message to Trump associates a DC insiders states "This is the way you kick off a big case,'' said Patrick Cotter.  Cotter is a white-collar defense lawyer in Chicago, who once worked as a federal prosecutor in New York alongside Andrew Weissmann, who is spearheading the prosecution of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy, Rick Gates.

"Oh, man, they couldn't have sent a message any clearer if they'd rented a revolving neon sign in Times Square,'' Cotter said. "And the message isn't just about Manafort. It's a message to the next five guys they talk to. And the message is: 'We are coming, and we are not playing, and we are not bluffing.''
