Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is a national membership organization of mothers with children, ages 2-19, that is dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.

The organization boasts more than 230 chapters nationwide, representing more than 40,000 family members. The Rockland-Orange Chapter of Jack and Jill plans annual activities and service projects guided under a national theme. The Chapter also presents innovative programs for children to stimulate their growth and development. Hosting An Adam Experiment aligns with this mission and the organization’s goal to shine a spotlight on a significant political figure in Black History.

"The Rockland Orange Chapter is honored to bring An Adam Experiment to the Rockland and Orange communities," states Leslie Sloan, Chapter President. "Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was a champion for African American civil rights. With his bold and unapologetic style, he fought against racial discrimination and attacked abhorrent issues such as lynching and segregation. We honor his legacy by bringing this play to our community."

Written by New York City based actor, Michael Chenevert, An Adam Experiment is a one-man play, also starring Mr. Chenevert, which explores the day in the life of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., a pioneering crusader for justice and equality during the Civil Rights movement.

By 1961, Mr. Powell was appointed to the powerful position of Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee and was one of the influential voices in the passing of significant social and civil rights legislation under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

An Adam Experiment takes this political backdrop and creatively delves into Mr. Powell's life where he is dealing with an angry country due to integration as well as with personal challenges with his marriage.

"I always knew Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. was one of our strongest leaders," states Michael Chenevert, writer and star of An Adam Experiment. "As a boy, I was called 'Little Adam' because I looked like him. He has always given me strength."

Produced by L.A.I. Communications, the U.S. Tour of An Adam Experiment is celebrating Black History Month with a ‘play for the people’ by presenting a comprehensive program for the communities where the play will be performed that not only entertains, but also educates and empowers audiences.

After each performance, audience members will have a chance to do a Q&A with Mr. Chenevert and discuss the play as well as its parallels with social justice issues facing our society today. After the performance on February 25, 2018, the Q&A will also feature nationally renowned speaker, Dr. Jim Bostic, and the Honorable Helen Diane Foster, who serves as the Commissioner of the New York State Division of Human Rights. The View’s Co-Host, Sunny Hostin, will moderate the panel.
