Wow I was both surprised and honored when a business person and artist Ms. Adrienne Whaley, founder of the Queens Center Of The Arts, told me we were selected for an  "Outstanding Community Service Award."  Actually I laughed in disbelief. I laughed under the incredulous irony of the moment.

See we started a local blog for our community to challenge the major media usually primarily covering our area with negative or sensational news stories. My daughter and I covered over 1,500 community events, Black businesses, and economic development stories before making a dime for our efforts.

80% of the time we didn't even get a thank you. But we did it as an act of love. We made a little money from a few of my clients in the area, that I had before we did any serious publishing to make some income.

But we did it because we were tired of the negative major media coverage of the area. What was so disappointing was the Southeast Queens, NYC area is historic in a few ways.

It is the 1st large area of over 75,000 residents where the average Black household income is higher than whites in the surrounding area according to the US Census and NY Times. Some of the greatest jazz artists lived in the area like Count Basie, Lena Horne, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, and many others were once residents of the area.

Also some of the top hip hop artists come from the area like LL Cool J, Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent, Ja Rules, some members of Salt & Pepper, Run DMC, A Tribe Called Quest, and others lived here. Also some of the top Black business moguls come from the area like Russel Simmons, Daymond John of FUBU and Shark Tank fame, The Founders Of Shea Moisture and owner of Essence Magazine Richelieu Dennis, Former CEO Of AOL Time Warner Richard Parsons, now owner of Mintons Jazz Club in Manhattan, and pioneer in mega church economic development and former US Congressman Floyd Flake, are just a small mention of the great business people who lived in the area.

Not to mention major league baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Roy Wilkins, and even the Brown Bomber the 1st major modern day heavy weight champion, Joe Louis were once residents.

It is an area steeped in a rich history and resilience to survive a brutal east coast drug cartel which threatened to destroy it. But we only hear bad news about our area like many Black communities.

My daughter and I set out to change the narrative about the Jamaica & Southeast Queens, NYC area and are now happy members of the community are honoring us at the house Julius Erving AKA Dr. J - built Nassau Coliseum.  I thank my community, family, and especially my daughter who worked tirelessly when I was having challenges and sick who kept things going. Without her this award would never have happened.

Our story illustrates when you do what you love the rewards and benefits will eventually come.  To attend the Long Island Nets Halftime Outstanding Community Service Award Ceremony with Kamau & nZinga Austin, and receive a free ticket when you buy one click here

We want to thank you and our friends, co-laborers, supporters on social media, family, and Ms. Adrienne Whaley for supporting the Southeast Queens Scoop. The grassroots "Outstanding Community Service Award" which will be awarded to my daughter and I, for publishing the Scoop, are more important to us than being formerly featured on CNN, Fortune Magazine Small Business, and me in Black Enterprise.

Family, friends, and subscribers have asked me to give them information on the award ceremony. The award ceremony will take place On the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, this Monday, January 21st, 2019.

It will be awarded during half time of the Long Island Nets game. The Long Island Nets are the team Dr. J AKA Julius Erving 1st played for in the NBA. They are now the Brooklyn Nets (but the Long Island Nets is the talent and rookie development team for the Brooklyn Nets today. The game will be at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island.

In the halftime show there will also be some great spoken word, poetry, and other entertainment from people in our community. Tickets are $20 (the price of movies in some places) and if you are among the 1st 5 people to get a ticket I am told you can get a bonus ticket for you free.
