David Soime and
TUFF's First Fashion Show

Paula Thompson's Questions: David, tell me about yourself?

Like where were you raised?

Why are you passionate about health and wealth issues within our community?

David's Answer: I’m a proud Haitian from Jamaica, Queens. As a Photographer and an alumnus of Queens College, I began to live the motto “We learn so we can serve.”

My passion for health came from seeing how poor physical health correlates with mental health. It hit home with the realization that I couldn’t catch my breath when playing with my two sons.

With my bachelor’s in economics and career in finance I became deeply curious with the metrics of wealth and how to insure people who look like me have a seat at the table. Lack of money is a major sign of stress, especially for men as we are seen to be on a financial clock.

Question: Why did you choose a Fashion show your first event? What was the theme and purpose of this event?

David's Answer: I thought outside the box and figured why not make Queens the hub for something deeper and more meaningful than just another party. Why not combine nyfw with Black history month in Southeast Queens, recognizing black brands and fashion designers!

What created even grander purpose was highlighting TUFF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that tackles poor physical and financial hurdles of the community. TUFF (Teaching Us Fitness & Fundamentals) provides financial literacy and fitness to youth ages 4-21. They also have a fashion brand of TUFF sweatsuits hence the event title Black Vision TUFF fashion show.

The black experience is very much peaceful and creative, and I am grateful to have brought this vision to life with a wide range of support.

Question: How do you feel your event enhanced the community?

David's Answer: My event enhanced the community by launching a campaign for financial literacy and fitness to the youth of our community. We tend to divide ourselves as a community rather than coming together and black unity is the most triumphant force for true success.

Question: What event is next for Focusedbydavid?

David's Answer: As Chief Director of Marketing for TUFF look forward to a resource fair basketball tournament mid-June.
