Link Established Between
Higher Education And Better Health

Nationwide  -- Studies asserted direct links between socioeconomic status (education attainment, career and income) and poor health outcomes.

Within Black and other minority communities, less than optional health outcomes are much more pronounced compared to their White counterparts. In other words, low socioeconomic statuses leads to much more chronic illnesses and untimely death in minority populations. The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reported that Black adults were 80 percent more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to have been diagnosed with diabetes by a doctor (HHS 2016). Though such reports are grim but there is a silver lining.

Investigations as completed by Dr. Anika Thrower show opportunities to reverse poor health outcomes. This starts with ensuring we understand the value in higher education and passing that knowledge along to our youth.

NYS Senator James Sanders Educates Clergy To
Empower Their Community

State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) hosted his monthly Community Clergy Breakfast on March 15, 2018 at Springfield Gardens United Methodist Church. The topic was community engagement and the objective was to train clergy leaders on how to be active in the community with social, economic and political issues. The special guest speaker was the Reverend N. J. L'heureux Jr., Executive Director of the Queens Federation Of Churches.

"The role of the church ecumenically is to tear down walls and to remove barriers," L'heureux said. "People have very kindly said that the role of ecumenism is to open windows and doors so we can, within our safe confines, look out at the 'other.' Maybe we might open a door to invite somebody in for a dinner party but then we let them go back to where they came from. I dare say that if we are to be faithful to the call of the gospel, we must tear down the walls and those are the walls of economy, of politics, of race - the boundaries that we have created to say that 'we are we' and someone else is the 'other.'

Reflecting On The Revolutionary Life Of Winnie Mandela

By Kamau Austin
Picture references
Mam' Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, the courageous mother of the free South Africa Movement, made her transition today. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, was also the former wife of the legendary Anti-Apartheid leader Nelson Mandela.  We give tribute to her for her sacrifices to support her husband Nelson Mandela, and the struggle against Apartheid.

For 27 years while her husband was in prison she was the face of the Anti-Apartheid struggle and suffered at the hands of the Apartheid regime.  Her contribution and commitment to end Apartheid cannot be understated.

Ms. Madikizela-Mandela, has been given a mixed commentary by the major media press at best and has even been slighted very disrespectfully in some media outlets. However, we at the Southeast Queens Scoop consider "Mam" Madikizela-Mandela a highly respected revolutionary and freedom fighter.  She was a woman warrior and freedom fighter on the level of Harriet Tubman and Queen Nzinga of Angola.

This is why we are posting her last interview to share her insights on the present political and economic developments in South Africa in her own words.  Lower down in the 2nd half of this post we share an interview about her from her neighbors for a more human touch.

Let's get informed about this iconic ancestor who fought so valiantly for the freedom of her country in a brutal and hostile atmosphere.
