Boston, MA -- Since it's founding in 1997 by a pair of self-avowed "nerds" from MIT and Boston University, BlackFacts.com has been the longest running data-driven repository of Black history on the internet. Over its 20+ year history, this online project, founded on the concept that there were black technologists who could give back to their community, has grown from a simple labor-of-love, to become #1 on all 3 major search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing), having its own Amazon Alexa(TM) Skill for the Black History Fact-Of-The-Day, and garnering millions of national and international visitors and over 100,000 followers via social media and email.

Yet despite all of that, BlackFacts.com was still a relatively unknown entity. The founders decided to change that fact for 2018. Over the course of the past 6 months BlackFacts.com has made drastic changes to what was once a text-based web site and email service that simply provided black history Fact-Of-The-Day. They have expanded their database content - with over 26,000 articles and growing. The website has been revamped with images, videos, games/quizzes, speeches and more. Every article is indexed and cross referenced with machine learning to identify related people, places and events. New content and new features are being added daily to allow for a rich user experience and to bring Black history to life.

Help Stop Prostate Cancer

Nationwide  How far would you go to protect yourself and your family? What if it was a matter of life and death? And what if the answer was a simple exam?

Like many, Kevin Byrd of Utica, NY would do just about anything for his family. When he learned that his grandfather was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he was devastated. But nothing prepared him for the death of his grandfather from the disease about 10 years ago.

"When my grandfather died from prostate cancer, my world was crushed," says Byrd. During Mr. Byrd’s time of bereavement, his colleague, Blossom Brown, shared that she had also experienced the loss of her grandfather to Prostate Cancer.

"I could not stand around to see another family suffer the loss of a loved one to prostate cancer," says Byrd. Kevin Byrd and Blossom Brown were motivated to keep their grandfather’s legacy alive so they joined forces and established the Brown Byrd Foundation, a Christian organization and a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

"That the Trump Administration continues to
drag its feet on upholding sanctions is worrisome..."

Washington, D.C.—Ranking Democrat on the Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats Subcommittee, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks, released the following statement on Trump Refusing to Impose Bipartisan Sanctions on Russia:

“In a bipartisan fashion, this Congress passed a bill that called for additional sanctions on Russia, Iran, and North Korea in a single piece of law that President Trump ultimately signed. In fact, it was the first major piece of legislation Congress passed early in the Trump administration. This overwhelmingly bi-partisan effort was Congress’ way of pressing the President to hold the Kremlin accountable in light of its interference in the United States’ 2016 election and continued provocation on Ukrainian sovereign territory.

 Coaching Black Women Millionaires

Dr. Venus Opal Reese, author of The Black Woman Millionaire: A Revolutionary Act That Defies Impossible

Nationwide (BlackNews.com) -- On January 24, 2018, Dr. Venus Opal Reese became an Amazon #1 Best-Selling Author in under 4 hours. Her book, The Black Woman Millionaire: A Revolutionary Act That Defies Impossible, was initially rejected by 30 publishing houses, who insisted that there wasn’t a market for Black women who wanted to be millionaires.

"When my literary agent sent me the list of the 30 major publishing houses who had turned down the proposal, I was devastated," shares Reese. "They turned down the book because it didn't have 'broad appeal.' I wrote the book for Black Women, like me, who have walked through life’s fire and bear the scars. And I wrote it as a Black Woman who had been hurt by her own momma, and as someone who survived the mean streets of Baltimore.

It’s inspirational, gritty, and edgy in a way that will set you free after it insults you with truth to your face."

After overcoming her initial hurt and lack of support from the book-publishing industry, Dr. Venus Opal Reese openly shared the challenge with her audience of over 100K Black Women on Facebook, who encouraged her to self-publish.

Families With Special Needs Children Learn
About Resources Available

In response to requests for help from community residents regarding children with special needs, State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway), held a two part resource fair on January 11, 2018 geared to connecting these constituents to city, state and federal resources as well as parent advocates who could provide vital information about education, healthcare, transportation services and more.

The morning session was held at the Ocean Bay Community Center in Far Rockaway and the evening session took place at Greater Rescue Church of Christ in Jamaica. Dozens of residents attended and asked a myriad of questions that included everything from how to acquire wheelchairs and ramps to what daycare and after-school programs are available.

“We are here to open the lines of communication in a way that is beneficial to both children with special needs and the organizations that serve them,” Sanders said. “When my constituents, whom I refer to as my bosses, tell me that they need services and they can’t find them – that’s a problem. I like to solve problems and that is hopefully what we are going to do today.”
