App Helps Black Travelers Connect To Black Businesses On The Road
Melanin Enterprise or "ME" is a champion for Black-owned businesses. They recognize how necessary it is for our communities’ sustainability to build our own social network that can conveniently connect conscious consumers to Black-owned businesses in local neighborhoods.
The owner and creator of Melanin Enterprise is EMichele Paul, a disabled, combat Marine Corps veteran and a single mother originally from Beaumont, Texas. After being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps she earned her bachelor degree in Communications. She created Melanin Enterprise as an alternative to mainstream social networks to empower the Black community to be self-sufficient and proactive in gaining our own economic independence without the use of mainstream social networks. She believes so strongly in her community and the value that Melanin Enterprise provides, that she funded the development and marketing of Melanin Enterprise, totaling $20,000, using her personal funds.
EMichele comments, "I have two thoughts that I constantly consider when creating Melanin Enterprise. (1) Build strong partnerships with industry leading black owned brands to provide a unilateral network of black owned businesses that offer the very best services, goods, and products to conscious consumers. (2) I want to know that if my two sons have to go somewhere unfamiliar to them, they will know what hotels, restaurants, or coffee shops will not shun them away or harass them because of the color of their skin. I want this not only for my children but for every person who is discriminated against just for being who they were born to be."

The social network is very scalable and will continue to grow with the needs of the online community. Currently, Melanin Enterprise has two main features, the "All Black Everything" City Guide and an exclusive, members only, group chat called, RealTalk.
Melanin Enterprise for Members
Melanin Enterprise’s main feature is the "All Black Everything" City Guide, which helps conscious consumers discover the best Black-owned restaurants, shops, hotels, spas, bars, and entertainment in cities across America! No matter where they are, all a member has to do is open the app, and they will be able to locate the nearest black owned businesses within 100 miles. Members will be able to:
- check-in,
- read ratings and reviews,
- locate the business by GPS,
- contact the company directly,
- find business hours, and
- book reservations if the business has made that function available.
Plus, it is a known fact that many of the larger social networks don't always show many of the posts on the pages that we follow. On Melanin Enterprise, we encourage openness and transparency," EMichele adds.
Melanin Enterprise for business owners
EMichele conducted a poll about 8 months ago and 73% of the people polled said that they would support Black-owned businesses more frequently if they knew where they were located. Melanin Enterprise takes guessing out of conscious shopping. Plus, since Melanin Enterprise has launched, we have converted regular consumers into conscious consumers. But do you want to know the #1 reason black owned businesses advertise their businesses on Melanin Enterprise? Their targeted audience is on the app constantly!
They believe that in order for the community to grow and thrive, it will take the commitment of "the village" to pull together all of its resources and make them readily available to conscious consumers around the country. She went on to say, "I decided to create advertising partnerships instead of memberships because we are a community not a country club. It’s time for us to unite and partner with each other to pull every black neighborhood in the country together to form ONE community."
She adds, "I want Black business owners to download the Melanin Enterprise app as Business Partners to increase their sales, grow their consumer base, strengthen brand awareness, and connect with a community that wants them to succeed, in a positive and supportive setting. We have three ways that businesses can advertise their services or goods.
We are calling business owners 'partners' because I want them to understand that from day 1, we will always be in this together. There are three types of partnerships, and business owners can pick the one that best suits their advertising needs.
They can become a Valued (FREE), Premium, or Preferred business partner. This app is going to give the black community something that it’s never seen or felt before on the internet... the freedom to be ourselves and own our destiny. This social network was created for us, by us, and it’s going to grow with us and stay with us!"
