With heavy gentrification taking place in both Harlem, and even Central Brooklyn, can I make the argument, almost by default, that Southeast Queens is becoming the new epicenter of Black Culture in NYC? Don't laugh I'm serious.

Queens is a very diverse borough and I respect all cultures.  However, In this article I give 8 reasons Southeast Queens is becoming like the default center of Black culture in NYC.


Although Harlem and Central Brooklyn have been traditionally considered the most celebrated and venerated areas in NYC for Black culture and even community empowerment these neighborhoods are becoming lighter in hue. Therefore, I feel Southeast Queens, is gradually becoming the default cultural center for Blacks in NYC?  It has rich cultural history and may be the last bastion of empowering Black cultural ethos in the NYC area.

Club Owner Ed Jackson, and the great featured performers at the jazz epicenter in Queens, Jackson Room, have certainly had another banner year of musical performances.  Ed expresses gratitude to the patrons of the Southeast Queens, jazz spot.  He expresses "thanks to our supporters for enabling us to provide another succesful year of musical artistry.  You made it possible for us to be true to our mission of bringing world class jazz to our community."

However, the year isn't over. Ed Jackson and the staff at Jackson Room, have a surprise treat for our community this month.  And They have planning something really BIG.

Their performances are about to go truly BIG - at the "go to place for jazz" in Queens, Jackson Room!  This month Jackson Room, will be hosting the exceptional music of "Cecilia Coleman's Big Band."  Special Guests for the evening will be vocalist Antoinette Montague and Ed Jackson on alto saxophone.

City Hall – Today, Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and Public Safety Chair Council Member Vanessa Gibson announced the Committee on Public Safety will convene a hearing on October 16th in Council Chambers to review a package of legislation that includes bills and resolutions relating to accountability in the criminal justice system and strengthening gun safety.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victims of the Las Vegas shooting,” said Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. “The pain that comes with these incidents has become far too common, yet our federal law makers refuse to take action.

New York, NY - 43North is a startup competition in a league of its own that has given away more than $5 million to entrepreneurs. Just recently, 17-year old entrepreneur Zandra Cunningham won the organization's collaborative M/WBE business plan competition designed to elevate the profile of minority and women business owners. It's called The Pitch, and after pitching her social goods brand, Zandra prevailed as the $15,000 grand prize winner in the Growth Companies category.

On the heals of winning The Pitch, Zandra is also announcing her Day of The Buffalo Girl Summit. This free annual event will take place on October 7, 2017 in the iconic Buffalo Museum of Science, and is a public-private partnership with the Zandra TLC Foundation designed to raise awareness of gender issues and empower young women to take action against the status quo through education and entrepreneurship.
